I’ve made it no secret that I love music. From the classic oldies to some of the modern-day stuff, and of course Praise and Worship music. I am particular about my Christian music, I don’t like the 7-11’s, where the singer has seven words and they get repeated eleven plus times, I find those songs annoying.
I love the songs that I get something out of, something that challenges me, encourages me, get’s me pumped to worship, songs that have “meat” in them.
It’s a song about God’s mercy and grace, and how it is new every day. Even though we mess up every single day.
A day does not go by that we don’t make a mistake, we make so many during our day and lifetime. It could be a minor or major blunder.
Some we can call mistakes or blunders, but others we call full-fledged disasters.
And depending on the level of severity of the mistake, moving on from it could be difficult.
As humans, it is our natural tendency to sin and do the wrong thing. My Pastor often says “we all sin and we do it in a lot of different ways”
And when we do sin, we either seek forgiveness and move on, or we beat ourselves up over it for a long time. We dwell on it and just can’t forget what we’ve done. Soon the sin starts to control our thoughts because we just can’t forget what we did.
The song starts out…
Well, I wish I had a short term memory
Wish the only thing my eyes could see
Was the future burning bright right in front of me
But I can’t stop looking back
How often do we, you, I, look back on the past? The things we said or did or acted. These mistakes haunt us, and constantly reminds us of the wrong we did.
The song goes on to say…
I wish I wasn’t wishing anymore
Wish I could remember that nobody’s keeping score
I’m tired of throwing pennies in a well
I gotta do something
Here goes nothin’
There has to be a point in our lives where we can’t live in the past anymore, we have to reach out to God for forgiveness and finally let go. You can’t go to the next chapter of your life if you keep rereading the previous one.
You must let go and know that God does not keep score or remembers the sins we’ve committed
Once we ask forgiveness, we can move on. And when we do, it becomes Day One of the rest of our lives.
It’s day one of the best of my life
I’m marching on to the beat of a brand new drum
Yeah, here I come
The future has begun
Through forgiveness, we can be free from the burden of the past and sin, we can look to a bright and promising future. And all that is possible through the grace of God.
Well, every single day Your grace reminds me
That my best days are not behind me
Wherever my yesterday may find me
Well, I don’t have to stay there, no
We will still have times when we mess up and sin. But through God’s grace and mercy, we have the power to move on. When we seek and know forgiveness, letting go of the past, moving onto the future should be very easy.
Some of the rest of the song goes…
Every morning, mercy’s new
Every morning, every morning
I will fix my eyes on You…
The future has begun, day one
I’m starting over
To start anew and fresh is the best feeling; it’s freeing and gives us peace. We have a loving God whose mercy is new every morning.
Lamentations 3:22-23 says:
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Is that not comforting? Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, no matter the sins, they don’t have to define us.
Every morning we can have a Day One through God’s grace, no matter what happens today, tomorrow has no mistakes in it yet. Learn from today, live for tomorrow.
Today is the 4th of May of 31 days. A whole new month of possibilities…Is it time for your Day One?
