Today’s journal prompt will be a little different, one that makes you think just a little bit more. I know, who wants to think on a Friday? Bear with me.
Maybe it’s the nerd in me, or maybe the writer, whatever it is, I like lists, and I have a book full of fill-in-the-blank lists for dozens of different categories.
Like Top 10 Disney Movies, Favorite foods, Cities, Ice Cream flavors…you get the idea. And while I would love to talk about Disney movies or ice cream flavors…because hello! What a winning combination. Today’s journal prompt is
In today’s age, it is very easy to get sucked into the slump and misery of the world, but we don’t have to.
There are many ways to stay happy and to feel joy. Now, before I go on, let me say, this is my top 10, yours will be different.
So, here it goes!
1. Spend time with God
Spending time in God’s word is important, especially first thing in the morning. It gives you the right start to the day and a better mindset. There is comfort, encouragement, and peace found within the pages of the Bible. And when we seek it out and read it, we will feel peace, and when we have peace, joy can come through.
2. Listen to music.
I love music, I don’t think I can express that enough. Listening to music is something I do every single day, and I play piano, so our house is often filled with music. Listening to music sets your mind free for a while, or lets you think on something else. Whether it’s the encouraging words of a Christian artist or the upbeat tune of the oldies, it brings me joy.
I love to read, but I often go through “reading mood swings” where I read 5+ books at once, or none at all.
I often feel that if there is a challenging or difficult situation going on in my life, I should dwell on it and not escape to the world of fiction. But, as I’ve said in previous posts, dwelling on those situations will make no difference whatsoever. Reading is a good escape, one that makes you happy.
4. Write or Journal.
I think this one speaks for itself. Writing and journaling brings joy, you can express what you’re feeling, the happy moments of the day or week and just write whatever you want.
5. Have me time.
Need I say more? Sometimes I need to shut out the world, go to my happy place, or just do something for me. Sometimes during these times, I do # 1-3, and I recharge (hello, introvert reference) and get ready to face the world again.
6. Watch a favorite movie or TV show
Again, need I say more? Watching a favorite movie (The Princess Bride) or TV show is fun and lets me escape as a book does. I love sitting down and watching a movie with my family. Its fun, and brings joy.
7. Go outside.
I love spending time outside in the summer and seeing what God created. I love hearing the birds, seeing the flowers in bloom, and just enjoying the hot weather. When it snows and is below 20 degrees nearly 6 months out of the year, I tend to savor each warm day while we have it.
I tend to have a bad habit of keeping my feelings inside and not expressing myself. And when I do that, all my emotions get bottled up, and it’s not good. Expressing yourself is important, keeping everything inside is not healthy. Even if it is expressing it through journaling, expressing is important
9. Accomplish stuff.
Finishing a project is the best feeling ever!! Putting off projects you may have started is not a good habit. And taking the time to accomplish something is a good habit, and when you finish, you will be happy.
10. Have Positive Thoughts.
This one might sound a little strange, but having positive thoughts can make you happy. Thinking gratitude can give you an attitude of gratitude.
Changing our thoughts from doom and gloom to happiness and joy, we will feel what we think. I know that sounds strange, but when we think thankful, we will feel happy. If we think negatively, we will feel gloomy. Thinking positive thoughts will give us joy.
So, there is my top 10 ways to stay and feel happy. What would be on your list?
